Abu Dhabi gold jewellery sales soar in August

DUBAI (Reuters) - Gold jewellery sales in Abu Dhabi soared 300 percent in volume and almost 250 percent in value in August from a year earlier after the metal dropped to nine-month lows, the emirate's industry group said on Monday.
"It was the best month the market has seen in almost 30 years and it compensated for any drops we have seen earlier this year," Abu Dhabi Gold and Jewellery Group Chairman Tushar Patni told Reuters.
"We had never expected that if gold fell below $800 an ounce we would see a 300 percent increase in volume and 250 percent in value, especially as many buyers are abroad on holiday."
Sept. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker said the U.S. financial system, dependent upon securitization rather than traditional bank loans,is broken, and may contribute to the weakest expansion since the 1930s.
``This bright new system, this practice in the United States, this practice in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, has broken down,'' Volcker said today at a banking conference in Calgary. ``Growth in the economy in this decade will be the slowest of any decade since the Great Depression, right in the middle of all this financial innovation.''
The former Fed chief projected ``a lot'' more losses from the collapse in the mortgage-backed debt market, after the more than $500 billion tallied so far, should the U.S., European and Japanese economies fail to pick up. He urged changes in financial regulations, echoing calls among sitting officials and legislators.
``It is the most complicated financial crisis I have ever experienced, and I have experienced a few,'' said Volcker, who has endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. Volcker ran the Fed from 1979 to 1987, and engineered an increase in interest rates to 20 percent to quell inflation that exceeded 10 percent.

Bonjour
The recent jump in gold prices "can be attributed to large amounts of money fleeing to the yellow metal as a safe haven in these troubled times," said Sam Kirtley, editor of Gold-Prices.biz. See Commodities Corner.
The financial crisis "will probably worsen over the coming months," he added, and the money the central banks are pumping into the system is adding to inflationary pressures, which "are certainly showing in gold [prices]."
extrait : Conclusions and Recommendations
Gold is a real asset which deserves its place in every
portfolio. It benefits from three major trump cards,
namely its feature as safe haven (refuge) which makes it
indispensable for the difficult periods, the strong demand
of emerging countries further to the important creation
of recent wealth and a very precarious balance between
supply and demand. In addition, gold is little correlated
to the other financial assets, what provides interesting
profits with respect to risk diversification. The best way
of investing in the gold is by means of indexed funds
(ETF) which are covered by physical gold and traded on
all the main stock exchanges of the planet or by certificates
duplicating the performance of the gold. The
quanto version is preferable because it enables to cancel
the negative effects of a falling dollar.
