TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Currency traders should take note of the shift in rhetoric by Japan's finance minister--the yen's ascent is starting to worry the authorities.
Japan isn't likely to intervene yet, even as the surge in the yen threatens to hurt exports and worsen deflation.
But investors would be advised to watch out for any further changes in tone that could signal Tokyo is getting closer to stepping into the market for the first time since March 2004.
Wednesday morning, Yoshihiko Noda said he was "keeping an eye" on the market, a comment that seemed to signal little displeasure with the yen's rise and helped push the dollar down to an eight-month low of Y85.40.
Wednesday afternoon, he changed his tune: "I feel the (yen's) current movement is a little one-sided... I will monitor (exchange rates) more closely."
That he thinks the moves were "one-sided" and that he's watching "more" closely now are important signals.
Japanese officials tend to choose their words carefully, hardening or softening their rhetoric as circumstances change in order to signal how displeased--or pleased--they may be with currency movements.
Generally, finance officials won't comment on the market when things are going their way.
If the yen starts to get out of line, they might say they're "closely watching" the market. That's still nothing to worry about, though, because at that point on the rhetoric scale they're still miles away from intervening.
But when they start describing moves as "volatile" or "sharp," they're starting to get serious. Labeling moves as "one-sided" suggests they think speculation may be driving the market, rather than economic fundamentals -- and they hate that.
If they start threatening to take "appropriate action," it's time to watch out. A warning like that doesn't mean intervention is certain, but it's a sign they are considering it seriously.
Another notch higher to "ready to take bold and decisive action" means intervention may be imminent.
There's no guarantee Noda will follow past verbal intervention conventions.
They were crafted by Ministry of Finance bureaucrats when Japan was ruled by the Liberal Democratic Party, which was ousted by the Democratic Party of Japan last autumn. Back then, bureaucrats often wrote scripts for the finance minister giving clear guidance on what to say publicly when asked about the foreign exchange market.
But the DPJ has been trying to change such bureaucracy-led policy-making. When Prime Minister Naoto Kan held the finance portfolio earlier this year, he sometimes diverted radically from official mantras and called openly for a weaker yen.
"If we had been writing scripts for him, he wouldn't have said such things," a finance ministry official told Dow Jones Newswires. "It's 100000000% wrong to think we controlled his statement."

j'ai short euroyen a 113.22 apres un long a 112.78 ce matin
un peu poussif ,ism a 16h et surtout nfp vendredi qui attire tous les regards....

Même idée que toi, sauf que je me suis posté sous les 114 car en 4h un cycle haussier débute. l'UT directrice me parait être le journalier.

Stop un peu au dessus de 115, objectif 111.

Sur l'EUR/JPY il y a aussi l'approche Fibo avec une grosse résistance vers 114/114.5. Une approche de trading suivant la "puissance" donne aussi un point short dans cette zone.

Tout à fait d'accord avec ton triangle, ce sont ces 2 facteurs m'ont fait mettre l'ordre short limite hier.
