Que Trump soit Trump n'est pas une surprise en soi : il n'a pas changé ni ne s'est caché pendant toutes ses années.

Mais là, on touche le fond ( pour aujourd'hui : je suis sur qu'il peut aller encore plus bas et qu'il le fera car cela résonne avec sa base électorale ) quand aux politiciens du parti républicain : cela va laisser des traces et leur avenir post Trump va devenir assez compliqué amha.

Une ch'tite guerre civile ferait bien dans le décor ...

++ The vote tonight will be a signal of the power shift in Europe. Power is fragmenting. Into the vacuum, crises will occur over Brexit and Italy, with the ECB finally stepping in to take control ++

• By 6pm London time we should know if Ursula von der Leyen has managed to secure a majority of votes from the European Parliament to enable her to become Commission President
• 374 is the magic number, with four MEPs yet to take up their seats
• She will get all of her own party grouping, the EPP, but can she get all of Macron's Renew Europe? Even with all of them, that's 290
• All eyes are on the Socialist S&D grouping, where she needs just over half of their 154 MEPs to get the 84 needed to take her over the line

• This won't be easy.
  • The German contingent, Merkel's coalition partners the SPD, were so against the whole process that Merkel herself was forced to abstain on the decision to choose Ursula in the first place
  • The Greens and Leftist groups have publicly rejected her
• The tide could be turning...
  • Former SPD bigwigs like Sigmar Gabriel have sounded more positive towards her
  • The 20 Spanish MEPs in S&D might back her in order to make sure Spain's Socialist candidate, Josep Borrell, gets his job as part of the package. They're the country with the biggest set of MEPs in the S&D grouping so hold some sway.
  • Portugal's Socialists have announced their support, that's another 9
• ...But this is a secret ballot.
  • MEPs of all flavours have criticised how her candidacy was a backroom deal
  • In trying to please everyone, the compromise candidate ends up annoying everyone simultaneously. e.g. there is suspicion over the support for von der Leyen from the more authoritarian Poland/Hungary contingents who opposed Frans Timmermans

Why does it matter?

• It demonstrates how the European electorate have become fragmented making it harder to reach a consensus
• That will slow down decision making. Even if Ursula squeezes through, she will be trying to be all things to all people, and end up pleasing no-one
• With two big fights on the horizon, this will make negotiations difficult
  • Italy's Salvini is cruising for a bruising. His party is one of the largest in the European Parliament.
    • Although his grouping with Le Pen's National Rally is only the fifth-largest, we can already see that losing the support of the fourth-largest (Green/EFA) is causing a headache for the EU leadership
  • Brexit negotiations are about to be forced down a much harder path under the new UK PM.
    • Can the member states keep their unity whilst it is being chipped away at the European Parliament level?

What will happen?

• Political risk for the future of the European project is rising
• A flare-up over both Brexit and the Italian Budget is inevitable
• Even if she wins, von der Leyen will have a disappointing mandate if she fails to gain 400 votes (Juncker won with 422), so expect some floundering until....
• .... step forward someone with international experience of tricky negotiations and a plethora of contacts, one Christine Lagarde
• Get ready for the ECB to assume leadership over the rest of Europe's institutions
