Bonjour,
Merci

Executive Summary
Commodities are becoming more and more important in our world. Furthermore they appeal to a larger public than a few years ago.
• They enable the diversification of portfolios among many assets like securities, bonds and real estate. Securities are overvalued, bonds offer the lowest interest of all their history and there is a huge risk of a slump in the real estate.
• There are many ways to take advantage of the potential of commodities. We can differentiate between traditional products and derivatives. The first ones are directly concerned by commodities unlike the second ones whose prices are dependent on price of another asset.
- For the traditional products there are:
Spot market - Securities of a commodity producer - Exchange traded funds
- And for derivatives, currently used for the interest of the leverage effect:
Futures & Forwards – Options
• Due to globalisation we have the opportunity to find commodities on many markets. The American markets with Chicago and New York on top are the most active ones. Their volumes are steadily increasing, particularly on the options markets.
• Many players pursue the same aim but they use different techniques to achieve it. We find three categories: the Hedgers, the Speculators and the Arbitragists.
• Two risks are present : the economic risk and the structural risk. We are able to avoid the first one but not the second one.
• The current situation of the world gives access to a market with a growing economy and big players like China or India that foster the world production and consumption.
• Diversification is a good way to diminish the risk. The more assets we have with a low correlation or no correlation at all, the more the risk tends to zero.
• With a good diversification, commodities could be as risky as securities at least inside the indexes. Taken individually they could be very risky and it is advised to avoid them.
To conclude the diversification of a portfolio by means of an investment into commodities can be recommended. This could lower the risks and increases the returns.
